PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Graduate Certification Program in Teaching English as a Second Language Education is designed to prepare teachers with skills, knowledge and attitudes to teach limited English proficient students.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the University’s admission requirements:

  • New Jersey Standard Instructional Certificate or CEAS
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0*
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended
  • Personal statement
  • Departmental interview may be required
  • Writing sample to be completed at interview
  • Professional Resume/CV
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores (for applicants who have been educated abroad and whose native language is not English). Exceptions can be made for students who have completed at least 6 credits of college level English courses from a U.S. institution, or who have submitted SAT or ACT exam scores.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • 19 credits
  • One course (3 credits) in a foreign language at the graduate or undergraduate level

ENG 5130 Seminar in Phonology and Structure of American English 3 credits
TESL 5420 Culture, Cognition & Communication for English Language Learners 3 credits
TESL 5435 Language Acquisition and Second Language Learning 3 credits
TECHNIQUES OF TEACHING ESL/EFL STUDENTS – 6 CREDITS
TESL 5440         Methods for Teaching and Assessing English Language Learners 3 credits
TESL 5820 Systematic Observation & Field Experience in ESL/EFL Settings 3 credits

TOTAL OF 18 CREDITS TO COMPLETE CERTIFICATION
