PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This program fulfills the requirements for New Jersey Certification as a Teacher of Reading and focuses on the skills of prevention, remediation, and reading development. The Praxis Examination is required for certification.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Baccalaureate from an accredited college or university
  • 3.0 cumulative GPA*
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended
  • New Jersey Standard Instructional Certificate or CEAS
  • Professional Resume/CV
  • Personal statement
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores (for applicants whose native language is not English). Exceptions can be made for students who have completed at least 6 credits of college level English courses from a U.S. institution, or who have submitted SAT or ACT exam scores.

CS 5411 Reading in Secondary Education 3 credits
CS 5412 Reading Disabilities 3 credits
CS 5470 Materials and Methods of Instruction for Teachers of Young Children 3 credits
CS 5481 Reading: Diagnostic-Prescriptive Teaching in Basic Skills 3 credits
CS 5493 Practicum in Reading 3 credits
CS 5600 Remediation in Basic Skills 3 credits

 

GENERAL ELECTIVES – 6 CREDITS
Two courses selected from the following, with advisement
CS 5471 Current Theory and Practice in the Teaching of Reading 3 credits
EC 5100 Language and Thought in the Young Child 3 credits
EMSE 5310 Literature of Children and Youth 3 credits
