PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Kean University Doctor of Education in Urban Leadership program is the first of its kind in New Jersey and one of only a handful of similar programs nationwide. The Kean Ed.D. program in Urban Leadership is a 90-credit program that prepares dedicated educational leaders who understand and appreciate the challenges of urban areas and who are able to make a positive difference in the state’s urban schools, educational agencies and communities.  The curriculum, based on an innovative, interdisciplinary, professional-oriented model, integrates coursework and practica culminating in a full-year internship in a school district or community education agency.

The Kean Ed.D. in Urban Leadership program is designed to create an advanced and diverse environment which supports personal and professional learning regarding school, family and community. Students are provided with the knowledge and advanced skills they need to work effectively to improve educational practice and improve the academic achievement of urban students.  The program provides solid intermediate and advanced training and the opportunity to put theory into practice through activities included in all course work and the full-year internship.

Important features of the program include:

  • Collaboration between leaders in schools, school districts and leaders in other educational and community agencies
  • Evening, weekend, and summer classes to accommodate working professionals schedules
  • Study of current research, theories and practices in urban education, leadership, policy, curriculum, and instruction
  • Opportunity to engage in applied (action) research project, resulting in a doctoral dissertation
  • An extensive internship in a school district, school, or other educational setting.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the University’s admission requirements:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Doctor of Education Supplemental Application (found within the online application)
  • Statement of purpose
  • Official transcripts of all colleges or universities attended
  • 3.0 minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) in last degree attained (lower GPA’s may be considered based overall strength of application)
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) taken within 5 years of application
  • Professional Resume/CV
  • Substantial experience working in education or family support agencies
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Letter of Endorsement from a Superintendent or Agency Director
  • TOEFL (for applicants whose native language is not English)

Note:

The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Urban Leadership requires the completion of 90 credits beyond a bachelor’s degree. Only candidates who already possess a master’s degree in Educational Administration will be eligible for full admission.  Students with a master’s may in another area be conditionally admitted until that degree or its equivalent is completed.

It is anticipated that candidates will enter the program with a master’s degree with work comparable to that listed below. Up to 36 graduate credits are eligible for transfer into the doctoral program if they meet the requirements similar to the following master’s level course work at Kean.

(The program director will analyze candidates’ transcripts and decide which courses will be accepted.)

EDD 6102 Educational Finance and Resource Allocations in Urban School Districts and Community Organizations 3 credits
EDD 6104 Effective Teaching and Learning Strategies in the Urban Setting 3 credits
EDD 6105 Educating Children with Exceptionalities in the Urban Setting 3 credits
EDD 6330 Introduction to Statistical Methods 3 credits

 

THIRD YEAR – 18 CREDITS

* Upon completion of the 54 credits, students are required to register for EDD 7103 (Matriculation Continued) every semester until they successfully defend their dissertation.
