PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Master of Arts in Instruction and Curriculum, Teaching English as a Second Language Option is designed to prepare teachers of English as a Second Language, grades K-12, and adults.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the University's admission requirements:

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0*
  • New Jersey or out-of-state Standard Instructional Certificate or CEAS  (Students who do not possess an initial teaching certificate should contact the Program Coordinator, Dr. Michael Searson at msearson@kean.edu.)
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended
  • GRE (Graduate Record Exam) 
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement       
  • Professional Resume/CV
  • Departmental interview  may be required
  • Writing sample of approximately one hour (to be completed at interview)
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores (for applicants who have been educated abroad and whose native language is not English). Exceptions can be made for students who have completed at least 6 credits of college level English courses from a U.S. institution, or who have submitted SAT or ACT exam scores.

*Candidates who believe their record warrants further review should reach out to the program coordinator to discuss their candidacy.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • One course (3 credits) in a foreign language at the undergraduate or graduate level
