PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Master of Arts in Instruction and Curriculum, Teaching English as a Second Language Option is designed to prepare teachers of English as a Second Language, grades K-12, and adults. Students who do not possess an initial teaching certificate should contact the Program Coordinator or the Office of Graduate Admissions.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the University's admission requirements:

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0*
  • New Jersey or out-of-state Standard Instructional Certificate or CEAS
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended
  • GRE (Graduate Record Exam) 
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement       
  • Professional Resume/CV
  • Departmental interview  may be required
  • Writing sample of approximately one hour (to be completed at interview)
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores (for applicants who have been educated abroad and whose native language is not English). Exceptions can be made for students who have completed at least 6 credits of college level English courses from a U.S. institution, or who have submitted SAT or ACT exam scores.

*Candidates who believe their record warrants further review should reach out to the program coordinator to discuss their candidacy.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • One course (3 credits) in a foreign language at the undergraduate or graduate level
