Martin D. Shulman, Ph.D., Executive Director
Dr. Shulman came to Newark State College (now Kean University) in September 1973, after completing his doctorate at the University of Minnesota. Through the years, he has taught most of the undergraduate courses as well as many of the graduate courses. He has served as undergraduate Program Coordinator then graduate Program Coordinator and now Executive Director. His research interests have always centered on language disorders, whether they occur in children or adults, and he has published articles in both areas. As Dr. Shulman's administrative duties increased, time for independent research has diminished. Now his research energies are funneled through the masters students' research projects that he directs.
Outside the walls of Kean University, Dr. Shulman had a small private practice from 1976 to 2008, providing speech-language pathology services, both in office and through visiting nursing agencies. He served as the first Chairman of the state's licensing board for speech-language pathologists and audiologists for fourteen years; he was elected to represent New Jersey on ASHA's Legislative Council and has been an active member, past President and Committee Chair in the New Jersey Speech-Language-Hearing Association since 1974, where he currently serve as a member of its Board of Directors. Throughout the years, Dr. Shulman has observed students in public schools, special schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, Early Intervention programs and private practices. He derives a great deal of pleasure in guiding future colleagues as they pursue their degrees in preparation for exciting careers as speech-language pathologists, audiologists or teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing. In hisrole as Executive Director, Dr. Shulman seeks to support his faculty and students, while coordinating the activities of dynamic programs.
