State Certifications

The Office of Teacher Certification submits applications for State of New Jersey certification upon the completion of required course work, as prescribed by the requirements set forth by the Department of Education.  In order for a student to qualify for certification and/or licensure, students must complete the following:

  • Complete required course work
  • Graduate from a degree granting program (not required for all certifications)
  • Submit a completed State Certification Application to the Office of Teacher Certification
  • Pay the appropriate fee to the Main campus Office of Student Accounting

Frequently Asked Questions about Certifications
 

When should I apply for certification?
For those seeking certifications for January, the deadline is October 15th.  Students looking to obtain certifications after May, the deadline is February 5th.  Students seeking certifications after August, the deadline is February 5th.

What do I need to submit in order for my application to be considered complete?
All applications must include a completed application form (with notary seal when applicable) and proof of payment for the certification for which you are applying.  Other documentation that may be required includes (but is not limited to) the following: employment/experience verification, language evaluation test results, verification of prior certifications/licenses (example: RN license), and declaration of intention to become a citizen.  Instructions as to when such documentation is necessary are included in the state certification application packet.
 

Do I need to include my PRAXIS score results with the application?
No.  When you take the PRAXIS, make sure that your results are sent to Kean, code: 2517 and the state of New Jersey code: 7666.  **Please note that you must include your social security number on the test application or the State will not be able to match the results to your application, resulting in your state certification application to remain in a pending status.
 

How do I pay for my certification application?
All fees can be paid at Student Accounting, Administration Building, 3rdfloor.  A copy of the payment receipt must accompany the application.  Fees can be paid by cash, check, money order, or debit credit card.
 

How long will it take to get my certification?
If applying through Kean, students can expect to review their certificates directly from the state website approximately six weeks after grades are posted.  Once Kean electronically delivers the applications to the New Jersey Department of Education, you may track the status of your application through the State by clicking here.
 

Why should I apply through Kean and not on my own?
By applying through Kean, you can ensure that your paperwork will be delivered in the most timely and efficient manner possible.  The electronic delivery system that we use has been proven to not only expedite the process, but also ensure that the necessary information is received by the appointed delegate who is the only person to handle applications from our institution.  Furthermore, you can contact Office of Teacher Certification at anytime with questions regarding the certification process or the status of your application.  Finally, the fees are the same whether you apply on your own or allow us to do the work for you!
